BUGGY AND SANDBOARDING ON LA MARCHA DUNE

Full day program

Description:

Our excrusion to La Marcha Sand Dune, also called Duna Grande, begins daily at 8:00 AM. Our clients are collected from their hotels by our staff, which is made up by a professional driver and an english speaking guide. Once on board, we will head to the south of Nazca, following a dirty road that will take us up to a natural lookout point, from where it is possible to observe a huge trapezoid etched onto the desert surface. This trapezoid is part of the world-famous Nazca Lines, and it is well preserved, due to its isolated location. We will stop our buggy here, and our local guide will give you an explanation about the meaning of this geometric drawing.

Later on we will head up towards the east, passing a variety of terrains, till we reach the valley of Taruga. Unlike the Nazca Valley, the Taruga Valley lacks of water, its river brings water just one month a year, making life hard for the people who live there. Fortunately water exists underground, and the people take advantage of this natural source to be able to live by means of wells and old underground channels built long ago by our forefathers. On this valley we will make a stop at the small village of Taruga, where we will see ancient Nazca aqueduct, which was built around 400 AD, and still today provides water to the villages nearby. The Aqueduct of Taruga features square stone constructions, a sort of blow holes, that according to local people where made to clean the interior of the channels periodically and also to repair them when eartquakes occurs in the zone. The undergroung channel runs some meters under the surface, to finally appear as an open trench that conveys the water into a large reservoir, where the precious liquid element is stored and used to irrigate the surrounding agricultur fields. This aqueduct represents a symbol of life in the region, without it, it would be impossible to find communities like this, still living in houses made of mud bricks, and in some cases, houses made with thin canes of bamboo, plastered with clay. Thanks to the channels, the farmers of this region can irrigate their fields and produce some crops, such as beans, cotton, corn, potatoes and also fruits, such as orange, grapes, and sometimes watermelons.

Afterwards, we will croos a green valley and eventually, a dry river till the valley of Las Trancas, where we will start to ascend with spectaculars views across undulating desert and rocky mountains. On the way, we will stop at one ancient cemetery, where it is still possible to see human remains and hundreds of ceramic fragments, showing various types of iconography from ancient times. Like many other old graveyards, this necropolis was also runsacked in the past by graverobbers, who destroyed the place in search of gold and fine textiles, taking away the all the treasures the mummies kept inside their tombs. After a short exploration of this burial site we will continue our excursion.

Our journey continues towards to La Marcha Once at its shores, we will stop for some photos, and then we will start to ascend throughout the sandy slopes, crossing countlees dunes, till the summit. Upon reaching the top of La Marcha, we will have the opportunity to see breathtaking views of the valley, with many beautiful sand formations and also to experience the exhilaration of one of the most popula sports in the desert ..Sandboarding, no trip to La Marcha is complete without at least one ride !!!

At the summit we will learn some safety techniques so that you can enjoy your ride safely. We will start to practice on the many little dunes that are at the top, so once we have practiced enough, we will be ready to enjoy the big sandy slopes.
