TOUR TO THE COLCA CANYON DEPARTING FROM PUNO

Program: Full day

Description

Our excursion to the Colca Canyon starts at 04:00 hrs. Our clients are collected from their hotel in Puno by our local guide/representative. Afterwards we will board a private machine and will drive towards the Colca Canyon. After sunrise we will reach the lagoon called Lagunillas, where trout farms can be seen, and if you are lucky you might also see Andean flamingoes and many others Andean birds feeding at the shores. On route there is a natural lookout point that allows visitors fine views of the lagoon and also of the Andean mountain range. Following an ascending road we will reach the zone of Viscachani, where will stop for breakfast at a little restaurant. Afterwards we will continue ascending a dirt road till we reach the highest point of our trip, “The Lookout Point of the Andes (4,800 m /15,748 Ft). At the very top, we will get off of the vehicle for some minutes to observe the amazing landscape that offers the site, observing in the background the volcanoes Ubinas, Mismi, Misti, Chachani, Sabancaya (active) and Ampato. Later on we will drive down hill to the main village of the Colca Canyon, the Village of Chivay (3600 m / 11.811 Ft). Due to our short time available we will enter to the town of Chivay just to pick up our box lunch. Afterwards we will start to follow a dirt road that runs parallel with the Colca River. This road will lead us to the famous natural lookout point known as the Cruz del Condor. On the way to Cruz del Condor you will enjoy spectacular views of the canyon and will see an array of ancient agricultural terraces carved onto the slopes of the mountains. The people from these regions dedicate their life solely to agriculture, therefore you will see many fields full of crops (depending on the season you visit it), mainly potatoes, corn and other products native from Peru. While driving along the edge of the Colca Canyon you can observe the great Colca River and also some small communities. After sometime we will reach The Cruz del Condor, where we will have lunch. (A real privileged to have lunch at such wonderful place). We will spend an hour or so at the site and if you are lucky enough, you will see the mighty condors soaring the sky. (Condors are frequently seen during the morning). Here also you can do short walking and may take spectacular photos. Later on we will return to the village of Chivay, where we will visit the hot springs of La Calera. At this place you will be able to relax at the large thermal pools located outdoor. Without doubt this hot spring is one of the best in the whole country, as it is located within an area where volcanoes are very active. After a relaxing bath, we will take our private car towards the city of Arequipa. We will reach Arequipa at around 20:00 hrs. Upon your arrival you will be drop off at your hotel. End of our tour.
