The Death Valley in Nazca Photo Gallery |
Making a living from the dead By Enrique Levano |
The following pictures you are about to see are the result of the great destruction carried out by grave robbers, the last century in the Nazca Valley. Due to the scarce of water in the region, the people who live in this valley have to live in very extreme poor conditions. One way to obtain money or to make a living, it is sometimes to plunder the grave of their ancestors and selling the relics they find in the black market. On this photo gallery you will see that most of the corpses or mummies are missing their upper and lower limbs and heads, that is because grave robbers split the mummies bodies into pieces in order to get their complete clothing or fine pieces of textiles the mummies were wearing at the moment they were found. Usually head and arms are cut off, so that they could take off the entire dress without breaking it. It will be impossible to stop the grave robbers, they will continue doing this, as there is no social support for them. Children who live on this valley can hardly read or write something, local authorities have done nothing for them, they have been forgotten, and only are remembered when departmental or presidential elections are coming. It is indeed hard to see their live conditions, as there is no much water in the area, some friends I made here, are already dead, some were forced to migrate to other areas, some are still struggling to survive, but when rivers do not bring water in summer, agriculture fail, and when this happens a new grave robber is born. |
