Paracas Land Tour Description:
At the designated time, our clients are picked up from their hotel and then will aboard a private vehicle to travel to the south towards the Nazca city. On the way bto Nazca we will visit the little town of Palpa, a quite zone famous for its archaeological treasures as well as for its sweet oranges. After crossing the Ica desert we will stumble upon the Rio Grande Valley near Palpa, where we will make some stops for panoramic views. Later on we will have arrived in the city of Palpa, where we will visit the 4000 years old petroglyphs. The ancient petroglyphs are spread over a narrow valley on the way up to the Andes. Here there many sections that are very well known by our guides. Our local guide will show you first the famous rock where are carved three ancient priests. This representation is known as the Rock of the 3 Ages. It is undoubtedly one of the best attractions of the zone. Afterwards we will keep moving uphill to see another section where we will find more figures. Among them, we will find a nice representation of an Andean Cat and a huge flat stone, on which are carved snakes with two heads. Then we will climb a little hill where there are more interesting figures.
Finally we will visit the last section, which is full of carving rocks. Here you may wander around and discover by yourself many other petroglyphs. Afterwards we will continue to Nazca. On the way we will stop at the zone of Llipata, where there are various geoglyphs or Palpa Lines drawings. In this aerea you will see a group of human figures etched on a hillside. Later on we will continue and will arrive at the Ingenio Valley, where it is located the Maria Reiche Museum, an interesting place where we will learn about the life of Maria Reiche, a German lady who dedicated over 50 years of her life to protect and study the Nazca Lines. The museum was originally the house of Maria when she used to live in the area in the 1970’s, and some years later in 1994 it was turned into a museum. The life of Maria Reiche is shown throughout old pictures taken when she was working on the Nazca desert long ago, showing a tireless Maria mapping, measuring and even cleaning the Nazca Lines. Her original cottage that housed her for over 20 years still can be seen here, showing all her personal belongings, including typing machine, old camera, tools of measurements and many others tools. On the right side of the Museum is situated her grave, where she was buried in 1998. Later on, we will continue our tour at the Mirador or Tower, from where it is possible to observe clearly two of the Nazca Lines, The Hand and the Tree. The hands figure or geoglyph, as they are also called by archaeologists is located on the left side of the tower. For some people this figure it would be representing also a frog, a divinity of water, an element of vital importance in such environment. According to the archaeologists most of the figures located in this area were made between 100 AD till 300 AD. The tree figure is located on the right side of the tower, at just few metres away from the Pan American highway. It measures about 70 metres in length and represents a local tree called Huarango, which is very abundant in the Nazca Valley. It is said that the Huarango tree lives up to 1000 years and its wood is one of the hardest woods in the world. It seems the Nazca people used the wood of this tree as a sort of stake to make the long lines and also to make the columns at the temples of Cahuachi and the roof of their tombs. Finally we will climb a small hill from where it is possible to observe many lines radiating out in all directions. Finally we will arrive in Nazca and our driver will drop you off at your hotel.
