The Antonini Museum was inaugurated on 7th July 1999, and today has on display over 300 ancient pieces from the Nazca Culture. The Archaeological Museum Antonini is run by the Italian Centre Studi e Richerce Archeologiche Precolombiane, which preserve and analyze the treasure heritage of the Nazca Valley, as a product of the archaeological excavations carried out by the “Nazca Project”, at the ceremonial centre of Cahuachi and other important archaeological zones at the Nazca River Basin since 1982.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE MUSEUM ANTONINI

Sector A:

The Museum focus itself in this sector showing the geographical location of the Nazca River Basin, displaying throughout pictures the different eco systems and environment conditions that exists in the Nazca territory, showing mainly our desert zones, the coast near the Pacific Ocean and the foot hill of the Andes, trying to emphasize the different climates that exist also in our valley. The idea is to let visitors know about the hard conditions in which the Nazca Culture developed around 2000 years ago.

Sector B:

On this sector the Museum Antonini shows in a series of Map the locations of the archaeological zones that are located in the Nazca Basin. In addition the here also are on display some crops and tools used by the Nazca people, among the food we can mention the sweet potato, peanuts, chilli pepper, cotton for making cloth and also for the confection of fishing nets. On the other glasses are on display large ceramics that belong to different periods of the Nazca Culture, representing in their iconography divinities from the sea and the famous shells called spondilus, which originally where brought long ago from the equatorial coasts. There are also original rocks depicting carving art and wonderful aerial pictures from the ceremonial centre of Cahuachi and Pueblo Viejo.

Sector C:

This is a large sector, where visitors may have a good insight into the Nazca Lines, due to the great pictures display on the wall. Here you will see spectacular photos of the hummingbird, spider, the figure known as E.T, the desert where the lines are situated and many others. On both sides of this sector visitors may also find glasses displaying colourful Nazca ceramics and necklaces made of shells. There is also here a replica of a Nazca wall made of bamboo, plastered with clay. On a solid platform you can find the different types of adobe bricks that where used during the construction of Cahuachi in its different periods.
Next to the mud bricks, you will find one of the most fascinating treasures found in Cahuachi, this is a large glass displaying a great collection of trophy heads, skulls that were decapitated in Nazca times and were kept (perhaps as offerings or trophy heads of war) under the structures of Cahuachi. (See main picture above). On this sector you will also find some ancient tolls that belonged to the Inca culture and mummies of babies, totally wrapped with fine textiles. On a wall you may see also pictures that belong to the excavations that took place in Pueblo Viejo and Cahuachi.

Sector D:

At this sector is on display large pieces of exquisite textiles, depicting ancient gods and animals. The textiles located here where found at Cahuachi by Dr. Giuseppe Orefeci, and show a high grade of art and wonderful colours. It is said that the textiles shown here are more than 2000 years old.
On one side visitors can find more pieces of ceramics showing in their iconography main marine divinities. On the other side we can see a replica of a wall that was uncovered in 2005 by the team of archaeologist at Cahuachi depicting marvellous incisions and frescos representing a classic geometrical Nazca iconography. Here visitors may learn many aspects of the Nazca society, such as its architecture, religion, economy etc.

Sector E:

The museum enclose an area of 750 square metres, and another area located outdoors of 1600 square metres, where stands out faithful replicas of ancient tombs chronologically display, replicas of painting caves, as well as an important ancient aqueduct still in work called Bisambra, which was built about 1500 years ago by the Nazca Culture. At this area visitors may also see a huge scale model map of the Nazca Lines representing the most outstanding figures, such as the monkey, the condor, the spider, the hummingbird, the parrot, etc. All archaeological these structures are surrounded by a beautiful garden with flowers, roses and trees.

Sector F:

The highlight of this room is undoubtedly the great mummified body of a woman placed in a squatting position inside a replica tomb, found in sector called Usaka in 1989. The mummy is well preserve and shows a perfect skin, hair, fingers, feet, and a clearly head deformation. Around her you can see ancient offerings, which were found at the moment of her discovery. In the central glass are on display the most exquisite ceramic artefacts found so far at the excavations. The best preserve are the large panpipes made of clay, colourful drums depicting Nazca deities and whistles in form of animals, all of which suggest music played an important roll in the Nazca society.

Sector G:

On this last sector, visitors may enjoy glasses showing more colourful ceramics and others tools made of bones and cactus thorns used in their everyday life. There are different tools for weaving, cooking, sandals made of llama leather among others. A visit to this great museum will give you a great insight into the different periods of evolution of Nazca culture.

The “Antonini Museum” is administrated directly by the “Centro Italiano Studi e Ricerche Precolombiane (CISRAP)” whose principal director is Dr. Giuseppe Orefeci.

The Museum preserves and analyses the archaeological evidence resulting from the researching activity of the scholars of the “Nazca Project” in the ceremonial centre of Cahuachi and other main sites of the Rio Nasca Valley, since 1982.
